Paul Cézanne (1839 - 1906)

Paul Cézanne is a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter, who influenced European modernism, and especially avant-garde painters working in Paris in the early 20th century. Henri Matisse called him the “father of us all,” Pablo Picasso “my one and only master”. Being young he gave up his career as a lawyer to study drawing and lived most of his life between Paris and Provence. Married once to a model Marie-Hortense Fiquet, had a son named Paul.

The Basket of Apples

Ca. 1893

With this piece Paul Cézanne basically neglected all the rules of classical perspective. The table has no right angles and has the sensation of rolling away to the left, the bottle looks drunk and the biscuits are baffling. Nevertheless, this particular work by Paul Cezanne became very influential and is often described as a balanced composition due to its unbalanced parts. This painting helped to form a bridge between Impressionism and Cubism.
