TSHIRT Oversize - Portrait of Joseph Roulin

$25.00 USD

Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890)

Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh is one of the most expensive and influential figures in the history of art. Nevertheless, he had an absolutely tragic life. He didn’t become a priest like he wanted, he was poor and officially mad – van Gogh spent time in psychiatric hospitals, cut his left ear after a confrontation with his friend Paul Gaugin, and committed suicide at 37 years. But all the way long he was an undeniable genius. He created about 2000 artworks – landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and self-portraits with his signature bold colors and impulsive brushwork.

Portrait of Joseph Roulin

Arles, 1889

Van Gogh loved to work on portraits, but for many reasons it was difficult for him to find models. Joseph Roulin was a regular postman in the Southern French town of Arles (where van Gogh moved in 1888) and one of the artist’s closest friends, who agreed to model for his paintings. In this painting Roulin is depicted in his service uniform and set against the background of spinning flowers.

Material: digital cotton.
