Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890)

Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh is one of the most expensive and influential figures in the history of art. Nevertheless, he had an absolutely tragic life. He didn’t become a priest like he wanted, he was poor and officially mad – van Gogh spent time in psychiatric hospitals, cut his left ear after a confrontation with his friend Paul Gaugin, and committed suicide at 37 years. But all the way long he was an undeniable genius. He created about 2000 artworks – landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and self-portraits with his signature bold colors and impulsive brushwork.

Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat (obverse: The Potato Peeler)

Paris, 1887

Van Gogh created more than twenty self-portraits during his time in Paris 1886-1888. This painting has been done on the two sides of the same canvas. First van Gogh painted The Potato Peeler at Nuenen, The Netherlands, in February–March 1885. Later, in Paris, in summer 1887, he turned the canvas over and painted Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat on the other side.
